Rains hit life in Hassan, Chikkamagaluru

Many parts of Chikkamagaluru and Hassan districts received heavy rains in the last two days. Traffic was hit by flooding on many roads. Residents of low-lying areas were a worried lot.

The State’s highest rainfall on Sunday 220.5 mm was recorded at Taruve Gram Panchayat in Mudigere taluk. Almost all villages in Mudigere, Koppa, N.R. Pura and Sringeri taluks received heavy rainfall. A landslide was reported near Kalasa in Mudigere taluk that affected residents of Haluvalli, Tarikonda localities near Kalasa.

Similarly, parts of Sakleshpur, Alur and Arkalgud in Hassan district received heavy rains. The inflow into the Hemavati reservoir at Gorur increased, forcing the dam authorities to increase the outflow to the river. As on Monday morning, the inflow to the reservoir was at the rate of 11,655 cusecs. The water level reached 2,921 ft against the full reservoir level of 2,922 ft.

A landslide at Shiradi Ghat caused a traffic jam on NH 75. Passengers were forced to take the alternative route of Mudigere-Charmadi Ghat to reach Dakshina Kannada district. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who was scheduled to travel on the stretch to reach Dharmasthala, also took the Charmadi Ghat route.

Chikkamgaluru Deputy Commissioner has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in five taluks on Tuesday, in the wake of heavy rains. The education institutions in Chikkamagaluru, Sringeri, Mudigere, Koppa and N.R.Purra will remain closed for the day. However, those in Kadur and Tarikere taluks will function as usual.
