Heavy rain has affected life in several parts of Gulbarga district, flooding low-lying areas and roads, and damaging several houses. A farmer was washed away in a stream at Sulepet in Chincholi taluk on Thursday evening.
Widespread rain in the district — which started on Thursday and continued till Friday morning — left behind a trail of destruction. Low-lying areas in many villages and towns such as Jewargi were flooded. Authorities joined residents at several places to clear the floodwaters that had many houses.
On Thursday night, at least 36 houses were damaged in Afzalpur (35) and Jewargi (one). As many as 328 houses have been partially damaged so far in the district in rain-related incidents. One person was injured when a wall of his house collapsed on him in Jewargi town on Friday.

Bhimanna Valikar, a farmer who was returning home from an agricultural field on Thursday evening, was washed away in a stream at Sulepet. His body was recovered on Friday.
Traffic on the inter-State highway connecting Waghdhari in Maharashtra and Ripponpalli in Andhra Pradesh and passing through Gulbarga district was disrupted after a bridge near Malkhed in Sedam taluk was submerged in the Kagina waters.
Movement of cement lorries from two major companies in the district to Maharashtra and other parts of the country was suspended after the bridge got submerged. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the bridge. Official sources told

Sources said Gulbarga district received 55.29 mm rainfall, the highest in a day this season, on Thursday. While Chincholi taluk received 135 mm rainfall, Jewargi received 105 mm, Chittapur and Sedam received 41.4 mm, Afzalpur 24.4 mm, Aland 24 mm and Gulbarga taluk received 15.8 mm rainfall.
The district has received 250.21 mm rainfall so far this month against the average of 200.1 mm for September.
Meanwhile, the district administration has prepared a rough estimate of loss to public and private properties due to heavy rain and flooding and it has been pegged at Rs. 52.57 crore. While the loss to public properties has been estimated at Rs. 52.39 crore, loss to private properties has been estimated at Rs. 17 lakh and loss of livestock has been estimated at Rs. 1 lakh. According to a preliminary estimate, crops on over 7,000 hectares of land in the district have been damaged due to heavy rain and flooding.

Mangalore city received incessant rain throughout Friday. The Indian Meteorological Department said its Panambur station recorded 48.8 mm of rainfall between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. on Friday, while the Mangalore International Airport received 30 mm of rainfall in the same period.
