Workers busy with excavation for track-doubling project on Chikjajur–Hubballi section stumbled upon an ancient well on the Davangere railway station premises on Thursday.
Earthmovers were pressed into service for excavation and the workers came across long beams that were buried in earth. As as the beams were removed, they came across an ancient square-shaped well which was intact. What is surprising is that the well is located only a few feet away from the railway tracks. Soon, the work was stopped and senior railway officials were informed about the discovery. The well, which is a few hundred feet deep, has a stone wall around it.
