R. Dhruvanarayana, Chamarajanagar MP and Pratap Simha, Mysuru MP, have lambasted the Mysuru zilla, taluk and gram panchayats for ineffective implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

Speaking at the district vigilance committee meeting here on Saturday, the two MPs said that Mysuru being the home district of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah it is sad that the district is in the 19{+t}{+h}position in the State with regard to the implementation of MNREGS, Mr. Dhruvanarayana said. When Mr. Pratap Simha questioned officials about the poor implementation of MNREGS, they claimed that their fear for the lokayukta was one of the reasons for ineffective implementation of the scheme. So, Mr. Dhruvanarayana said that if officials are upright there is no need to have any fear. Mr. Dhruvanarayana said that MNREGS not only provides jobs but also creates permanent assests in rural areas. Hence apathy of officials in implementing the scheme will not be tolerated.

At the moment many gram panchayats are utilising only Rs. 1 lakh per year, but each GP should carry out works worth Rs. 25 lakh annually, they said, adding that the CEOs should become more efficient. Mr. Pratap Simha raised the issue of not providing jobs to persons with disability. He added that they are not being given unemployment allowance.
