Poll notification for Karnataka to be issued on March 19

Voter registration to go on till March 16

Notification for filing of nomination papers for all the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in the State, scheduled to go for polls in a single phase on April 17, will be issued on March 19.

Chief Electoral Officer, Karnataka, Anil Kumar Jha told presspersons here on Wednesday that Returning Officers would receive the nominations from March 19 to 26.

Scrutiny of nominations will take place on March 27, while the last day for withdrawal of nominations is March 29.

The model election code of conduct had come into force with immediate effect following the announcement of the election dates by the Election Commission of India.

The State government has been informed about it, Mr. Jha said. Of the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka, five are reserved for Scheduled Castes and two for Scheduled Tribes.

As on January 1, 2014, a total of 4,46,43,877 voters are on the electoral rolls, which constitutes 69.66 per cent of State’s population. A total of 2.27 crore and 2.18 crore male and female voters, respectively, have enrolled their names in the list. The gender ratio is 960 female voters for 1,000 males. Other voters (transgenders) number is 3,260.

First-time voters (aged 18 and 19) will constitute about little less than two per cent of the total voters, Mr. Jha said. Over 10 lakh names have been added to the electoral roll since 2013 Assembly elections.

The number of voters was 4.36 crore during the Assembly elections in 2013 and 4.17 crore in 2009.

Additions

There will be 54,261 poling booths spread across the State and the Election Commission has decided to hold special camps on March 9 for eligible voters to verify, add or modify their details in the electoral list.

Mr. Jha said March 16 would be the last day for eligible voters to submit Form No. 6 for enrolling names in the voters’ list. Forms are available at BangaloreOne centres and ward offices in the city. A few days after submission of applications, newly registered voters can avail of their Elector Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) from BangaloreOne centres. Applications submitted through online are also accepted. In other parts of the State, the facility is available in the jurisdictional taluk offices.

On holding elections to the post of Mayor of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike during the period of code of conduct, Mr. Jha said the Election Commission would be consulted and its view would be communicated to the BBMP.
