Policeman injured during operation to nab undertrial on run

A police constable sustained injuries when his team was trying to nab an undertrail who had escaped from the Kalaburagi Central Prison last year.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of police personnel from University and Farhatabad police stations rushed to Ashraya Colony near Kesaratagi on the outskirts of the city to nab Tajuddin, who had been on the run since June last year. The police said that they were forced to open fire when the accused, who was hiding in one of the abandoned houses of Ashraya colony, started attacking the police team with lethal weapons, injuring Raghuveer, a police constable attached to Farhatabad police station.

The under-trial was rushed to teaching hospital attached to Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (district hospital) and the police constable was admitted to Basaveshwara Hospital.

“We were left with no option but to open fire after the accused attacked the police team with a knife and stabbed one of our team members. We fired two rounds injuring his right leg and arrested him,” S.S. Hallur, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Rural), who led the operation, told

As per the sources in the police department, Tajuddin along with three others was arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act on charges of raping a minor girl in March 2016. He subsequently escaped from a hospital. Though he was caught immediately, he, along with other three accused, escaped from central prison later in June 2016. Since then he was on the run, while two others were arrested again and one had surrendered before the police.

A case has been registered at University police station.
