An Additional Inspector-General of Police (Prisons) died of a massive cardiac arrest when he was attending a workshop at the headquarters of the Prison Department in the city on Friday evening.

Veerabhadraswamy, 59, Additional IGP (Prisons), who was due to retire on June 30, 2019, was on the dais at a workshop where prison staff were being trained in navigating e-prison software. Around 4.30 p.m., he started perspiring, breathing heavily and collapsed on stage. Staff members attempted CPR and rushed him to Mallya Hospital where he breathed his last. The final rites were performed in his village of Gulugenahalli near Sira on Saturday.

Mr. Veerabhadraswamy has four children. His father, Veeranna, 93, is a retired Sub-Inspector. “He was punctual, hard-working, helpful and popular. The department has lost a good hand,” a senior officer said.

Home Minister G. Parameshwara said the demise of Veerabhadraswamy has left a void in the department. “He always remained true to his beliefs and principles,” he said.

Senior prison officials including Additional DGP (Prisons) N.S. Megharikh, and other senior officials, attended the last rites.
