Police book cases against Jagadish Karanth

The Puttur Town police have registered cases against Hindu Jagarana Vedike leader Jagadish Karanth for attempting to incite communal harmony, promoting enmity and threatening a public servant in his public speech.

Mr. Karanth, during a Hindu samavesha organised in Puttur recently, reportedly spoke ill of a police sub-inspector and other officers of Sampya police station in Puttur taluk for their alleged anti-Hindu actions.

Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy, who visited Mangaluru on Wednesday, directed the police to act against Mr. Karanth and said nobody was above the law. Cases under Sections 505 (1)(c), 505 (2), 153 (a) and 189 of the Indian Penal Code have been registered.

Section 505 deals with statements made with an intention to incite any class or community to commit offence against any other class or community and statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes. Section 153(a) deals with actions aimed at promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language etc., while Section 189 deals with threat of injury to public servant.
