S. Varalakshmi, member of the State executive committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), on Saturday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of serving the interests of capitalists in a democratic country.
“Mr. Modi claims himself to be chief servant of the country. However, he has been serving the capitalists at the cost of the welfare of poor people,” he said at the ninth district-level convention of the party. “After getting elected and coming to power at the Centre, Mr. Modi has been taking decisions in favour of capitalists. The Union government de-regulated diesel only to help private companies,” he said. Many BJP supporters claimed that prices of petrol and diesel had come down since their party came to power at the Centre. “The prices have come down because of a fall in oil prices in the international market. Mr. Modi-led government has no role in it,” she said.
Meenakshi Sundaram, another member of the state council, said the governments had been exploiting workers for their self-interests. “No political party in Karnataka is interested in addressing the problem being faced by sugarcane growers. Everybody is using the issue for gaining political mileage.
