A day after a worker was killed in an accident at Yermarus Thermal Power Station (YTPS) construction site, about 11 km from here, Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd. (KPCL) has decided to constitute a committee of experts to ensure safety of workers employed at the project.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Technical Director of KPCL, P. Bhaskar, said the cause of Tuesday’s accident was due to the negligence and over-confidence of the engineers and contractor on the spot. “Workers attempted to lift three heavy iron pipes that together measured six tonnes, with a hydraulic crane, at one time. The crane was equipped with a wire rope of just two-tonne capacity. The wire broke and the pipes fell on the worker, killing him,” some workers told presspersons. Mr. Bhaskar said property worth Rs. 1.5 crore had been destroyed by angry labourers. “Following the death of their fellow labourer, workers ransacked offices of KPCL and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd., destroying equipment computers, air-conditioners, furniture and other stuff,” he said.
