The Legislative Council’s assurance committee has recommended cancellation of linguistic minority status to 10 undergraduate and postgraduate dental colleges that have failed to fill quota seats as stipulated by the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI).
The panel said violations by these institutions should be brought to the notice of the Medical Council of India and Dental Council of India so that action can be taken against them. The government should take steps to withdraw permission to them to conduct their own entrance test, the report said. It has expressed “dissatisfaction” with the government for not acting against the colleges despite being aware of violations. The panel examined the admission pattern in these institutions over three academic years. The report says that while the rules stipulate that 66 per cent of seats should be filled by students of the minority linguistic group, all of them had failed to adhere to the norm. The NCMEI lays down three norms for minority status: the institution must be started by people of the minority religious/linguistic group, it should be run by them, and it should have a stipulated percentage of minority students enrolled.
The institutions examined by the panel and found to have failed the quota norms are: Rajarajeshwari Dental College and Hospital, Oxford College of Dental Sciences, Vaidehi Institute of Dental Sciences and Research Centre, Al Badar Dental College and Hospital, Bangalore Institute of Dental Science and Hospital, Coorg Institute of Dental Sciences, Farooqia Dental College, Navodaya Dental College, Al-Ameen Dental College and A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences.
