Panchayat polls: scrutiny of nomination papers completed

Ten nominations in Mandya and one in Chamarajanagar rejected

As many as 1,037 nomination papers filed by candidates to contest the zilla and taluk panchayat elections comprising 196 constituencies in the district have been found to be in order after the scrutiny.

Elections to the Mandya Zilla Panchayat and seven taluk panchayats comprising Mandya, Malavalli, Maddur, Srirangapatna, Pandavapura, Nagamangala and K.R. Pet are scheduled to be held in the second phase on February 20.

The district has 41 zilla panchayat and 155 taluk panchayat seats. A total of 1,047 aspirants had filed their nomination papers, the Department of Information and Public Relations said.

The scrutiny of nomination papers was held on Tuesday. According to the official information received here on Tuesday night, the district Election Commission had received 293 nomination papers for ZP and 754 for TP polls. During the scrutiny, 10 nomination papers, consisting of four ZP candidates and six TP aspirants, were rejected for various reasons.

Last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is February 11.

Scrutiny of the nomination papers of candidates contesting for 23 zilla panchayat and 89 taluk panchayat seats has been completed on Tuesday at the headquarters of respective taluks in the district, according to sources.

Only one nomination paper of N.M. Shobharani submitted for Sathegala Zilla Panchayat constituency in Kollegal taluk has been rejected. Failure to submit caste certificate is stated to be the reason for the rejection. No nomination papers were rejected from Chamarajanagar, Yelandur and Gundlupet taluks.

A total of 424 nomination papers submitted to 89 TP seats by 374 candidates in four taluks of Chamarajanagar district have been found correct. Last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is February 11.

Meanwhile, eight contestants from ZP and 24 from TP polls have so far withdrawn their nomination papers.
