Pacheco’s plea for more time to surrender dismissed

A bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Justice Fakkir Mohamed Ibrahim Kalifulla and Justice Shiva Kirti Singh, on Monday summarily dismissed the application moved by the now-absconding convict Goa’s former Rural Development Minister Mickky Pacheco seeking more time to surrender.

The Court also heard the intervention application filed by activist lawyer Aires Rodrigues opposing Mr. Pacheco’s plea.

The Court made strong observations on the conduct of Mr. Pacheco after it was pointed out by Adv. Devdatt Kamat appearing on behalf of Mr. Rodrigues that Mr. Pacheco had made a mockery of the law by absconding for over a month with a proclamation now issued against him by the Margao Judicial Magistrate First Class.

Observing that there cannot be one law for the politically influential and another for the common man, the Court dismissed Mr. Pacheco’s plea while pointing out that its March 30 order dismissing his Special Leave Petition filed was final.
