The opposition BJP and Janata Dal (S) members disrupted the proceedings of the general body meeting of Kalaburagi City Corporation for more than 30 minutes, charging Mayor Bhimreddy Patil of not following the procedure for convening general body meetings and fixing the agenda.

The Mayor was forced to adjourn the meeting after the BJP and Janata Dal (S) members trooped into the well of the house and staged a dharna.

They demanded the postponing of the general body meeting, since the rules prescribed for convening the meeting were not followed and the agenda for the meeting was not discussed in the business advisory committee.

After a ten-minute adjournment, the Mayor and the leader of the ruling party Syed Ahmed appealed to the members to call off their dharna and allow the meeting to proceed.

Heeding the appeal, they called off their dharna and allowed the house to function normally. Mr. Patil clarified that all the rules were followed while convening the meeting. The dates and the agenda for the meeting were fixed in consultation with the leader of the opposition Shivanand Ashtagi.

A majority of the members had received notices for the meeting, he said. The meeting gave its seal of approval to the action plan for the proposed UGD works at Kapnoor area, which included the construction of the Sewage Treatment Plant and other works at a cost of Rs. 141 crore.

This would be shared by the City Corporation, Hyderabad Karnataka Region Development Board (HKRDB), and the State government. While the HKRDB has agreed to provide Rs. 30 crore, the State government would provide Rs. 40 crore. The Corporation would give another Rs. 21 crore as its share.

The remaining amount would be raised as loans from financial institutions.
