Normal life paralysed as Shivamogga receives torrential rains

Paddy fields flooded due to the overflowing Varada river near Sagar in Shivamogga district.

Shivamogga district is receiving torrential rain owing to which normal life has been paralysed.

In wake of rainfall, the district administration has declared a holiday for schools and colleges here on Tuesday. Ramesh, a farmer has died due to a landslide when he was working in his paddy field in Kannangi in Tirthahalli taluk. K.A. Dayanand, Deputy Commissioner has handed over ₹5 lakh as compensation for the family members of the deceased.

Paddy crop cultivated on more than 500 hectare land has been flooded by the overflowing Varada river in Sagar taluk. Rainwater has entered into 23 houses in the low-lying RML Nagar and Tank Mohalla localities in Shivamogga city.

The inflow of water to Linganmakki reservoir that was at the rate of 52,423 cusecs on Monday has risen to 1,01,176 cusecs on Tuesday. The water level here was at 1,790 feet against the maximum level of 1,819 feet.

Tunga river was flowing near the danger mark in Shivamogga city as water is being released at the rate of 76,089 cusecs from the Gajanur reservoir.
