Mysuru sees dip in crime rate in 2014

Police attribute it to better vigilance, strict enforcement of rules

The police on Thursday claimed that the city had recorded a substantial decline in crime and deaths due to road accidents in 2014 in comparison to the previous years.

Mysuru city Police Commissioner M.A. Saleem attributed this to better policing and stricter enforcement of the rules.

“Particularly, incidents of chain-snatching and robbery have come down by 50 per cent. Better policing and ensuring that the criminals are put behind bars have helped make the city peaceful,” he told

Far from becoming complacent, Mr. Saleem said the police will not only continue to keep the crime rate under control but also focus more on checking motor vehicle theft in the New Year.

He said strict enforcement of traffic rules had ensured a reduction in road accidents as well as the number of deaths and injuries. The number of cases booked under the Indian Motor Vehicles Act had doubled from 3.12 lakh to 6.75 lakh.

Though the incidents of house theft had gone up during 2014, Mr. Saleem sought to dismiss it as “trivial offences”.

He said property loss in 2014 amounted to Rs. 3.38 crore, which was a huge decline from Rs. 8.17 crore in 2013 and Rs. 7.19 crore during 2012.
