Mysuru Indira Canteens launch now on January 12

They will be operated on the lines of the ‘Bengaluru model’

Indira Canteens in Mysuru will become operational from January 12 with the work on installing the kitchens almost ready.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will inaugurate the canteen on the CADA office premises at 10 a.m. on Friday.

The inauguration was earlier planned for January 1. However, the delay in completing the works rescheduled the launch.

The canteens will be operated on the lines of the canteens established in Bengaluru by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). Accordingly, the Mysuru operations will be on the lines of “Bengaluru model” and the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) will look after its operations.

MCC commissioner G. Jagadeesha told The Hindu that installation of a kitchen at the canteen located at Kumbara Koppal is ready and cooked food will be distributed to other canteens from this kitchen until another kitchen at Alanahalli is operational.

The commissioner said the ownership of the canteens rests with the MCC and the committee under the Deputy Commissioner will overall monitor its operations, including tender process and so on.

Mr. Jagadeesha said food will be cooked at two kitchens and supplied to 11 canteens. Eleven canteens have come up at various locations across the city, and the construction of canteens was been done using pre-cast material.

The canteens have come up on the CADA office premises, K.R. Hospital premises, KSRTC bus stand, Azeez Sait Nagar Double Road, Ashokapuram, Kumbarakoppal, Triveni Circle on Dr. Rajkumar Road, Jodi Tenginamara Road, Sharadevinagar, T. Narsipur Road junction near Alanahalli, and near Sewage Farm in Vidyaranyapuram.

UGD lines, water connection, power supply, installation of CCTV cameras, and other works were nearing completion, he said, adding that food contract had been issued through tenders.

The commissioner said the tender holders will decide on the number of staff members to be employed for running the canteens, which will be serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Half of the operating cost of each canteen will be shared by the MCC and the Labour Department.

The number of canteens for Mysuru was decided based on the city’s population. The location of the canteens is based on the floating population density.

Each canteen has been built for a population of one lakh and it will serve food to at least 500 people, mostly economically weaker sections, students, and workers.
