Sandhya Kumari elected unopposed as vice-president

Meenaskshi Madhava Bannanje (left) and Sandhya Kumari were elected unopposed as President and Vice-President of Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) on Tuesday.

Meenakshi Madhava Bannanje and Sandhya Kumari of the Congress party were elected unopposed as the President and Vice-President of Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) on Tuesday.

The president’s post is reserved for woman of general category, while the vice-president’s post is reserved for a woman belonging to the Scheduled Caste.

Ms. Bannanje represents the Kodavoor ward in Udupi CMC, while Ms. Kumari represents Vadabhandeshwara. Ms. Bannanje was thrice elected as councillor and was once a nominated councillor in the CMC. Ms. Kumari is a first-time councillor.

Speaking to presspersons after her election as president, Ms. Bannanje said that she would give priority to solving the drinking water problem and extend the underground drainage system in the city.

The Udupi CMC has a total strength of 35. The Congress party is ruling the CMC with 22 councillors, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 12 members. A lone independent councillor, Harish Ram, has associated himself with the BJP, taking its strength to 13.
