Manipal gangrape: hearing adjourned to May 26

The District and Sessions Court has adjourned the hearing in the Manipal gangrape case to May 26.

T.S. Jituri, Public Prosecutor, said that the court had issued summons to three witnesses for examination by the defence counsel on Friday. But these witnesses were not examined.

The court then adjourned the hearing to May 26, he said.

It may be recalled that a medical student of Manipal University, hailing from Kerala, was allegedly abducted and gangraped near Manipal on June 20, 2013.

After a massive manhunt, the police caught three suspects, Yogesh Poojary, Hariprasad Poojary and Anand, on June 27, 2013.

They were charged under Sections 366, 376D, 506 read with Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

The police had also arrested Balachandra, brother of Yogesh, and Harindra, brother of Hariprasad, on the charge of trying to destroy evidence on July 2, 2013. However, Balachandra and Harindra were released on bail in December 2013.
