The former Lokayukta N. Venkatachala has termed the recently enacted Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act “corrupt public servants’ protection Act”.

Instead of introducing a strong Lokpal legislation, the government had put forth a watered down version. The new system served the opposite purpose and in fact, protected the corrupt, he alleged.

Mr. Venkatachala was speaking at the eighth anniversary of Bhrashtachara Nirmoolana Vedike.

A.T. Ramaswamy, who headed the Joint Legislature Committee on encroachment of government lands in Bangalore Urban district, criticised the State government for targeting small-time encroachers in the garb of action against encroachers in Bangalore. “The report I submitted brought out the encroachment of nearly 41,000 acres of land in Bangalore. Many bigwigs, developers and politicians have encroached government lands. But the government is going behind small-time poor dwellers,” he said.

Mr. Ramaswamy had submitted the report to the House in 2007.
