Leopard kills calf

In a fresh case of animal attack, a leopard on Tuesday evening killed a young calf belonging to a farmer in Dukkarhonda, a small village in the forests under Jamboti range of Khanapur taluk.

According to a forest official who visited the spot on Wednesday, the leopard had attacked the calf while it was grazing in a field on the outskirts of the village. The leopard had left back the carcass after eating it.

This is the second incident of a leopard attack in the same village since January 13, when a leopard had killed the calf of buffalo.

Denying that the wild cat was a tiger, official sources said that the villagers of Khanapur taluk, particularly those living close to the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary, fear that every attack by a wild cat or a wild animal is by a tiger after the release of a tiger (captured in Padavaralli) in BWS, which was eventually killed.

Sources said as a precautionary measure, the carcass of the calf has been kept in a cage to trap the leopard, in the event of it returning to eat the remaining portion of the calf. If trapped, it would be taken far away and released deep inside the forest.
