Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) on Friday set a one-year deadline for the government to explore all possibilities to make Kannada the medium of instruction in primary education in Karnataka.

Speaking to presspersons, president of the parishat, Pundalika Halambi, said: “If the parishat reaches the conclusion that government has not done enough on the issue, it will decide on not holding the 82nd Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelan.” He was responding to the stand of Devanur Mahadeva, who refused to chair the sammelan because of his ideological differences with the parishat over the issue of making Kannada the medium of instruction in schools. Mr. Mahadeva called upon the parishat to abandon the sammelan till the government solves the issue.

Mr. Halambi said the parishat honours the sentiments of Mr. Mahadeva and will pass a one-line resolution on the issue in the 81st sammelan. A committee of experts will be formed to chalk out a strategy for the Statewide Kannadiga movement to bring pressure on the government.
