Krishna in spate after fresh spell of rain

After a brief respite, a fresh spell of heavy rain lashed the catchment areas of the Krishna and its tributaries adding to the woes of people living on the banks of the river. The Krishna is again in spate with its water-level rising.

As many as 18 bridges, barrages and low-lying roads along the Krishna, the Dudhaganga and the Vedaganga in Chikkodi, Raibag and Athani taluks are submerged and people have been advised to use alternative roads thrown open to traffic by the administration.

The rise in the level of the Krishna follows an increased outflow (1.56 lakh cusecs) from the Rajapur barrage on the Karnataka-Maharashtra border.

The water-level at the barrage on Monday was 46.4 ft against the maximum 15 ft.

Also, the cumulative inflow into the Hippargi barrage across the Krishna was at a rate of 2.23 lakh cusecs. The same quantity of water is being let out downstream towards the Alamatti dam. The outflow from Alamatti was 2.03 lakh cusecs. The water level at the dam stood at 518.45 m against the maximum of 519.60 m.

Meanwhile, farmers are happy to learn that the Hidkal dam across the Ghataprabha received copious inflows in the last three days, boosting the prospects of the dam recording the full level soon. The water-level at the dam was 2,173.80 ft, 1.2 ft short of the maximum 2,175 ft.
