Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha M. Mallikarjun Kharge lashed at Union government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the failure in checking the constant rise of prices of fuel and other essential commodities.
Speaking to mediapersons on Monday after participating in the agitation as part of the Bharat bandh call given by the Opposition against the price-rise, he criticised the Centre for forcing the people to take to the streets. “All your [Union government’s] policies and schemes have failed. You have put a heavy burden on the shoulders of common people. Your inability to control and reduce fuel prices despite the falling prices of crude oil in the international market has caused the price-rise of all other commodities. The sky-rocketing prices of essential commodities have made people’s lives miserable. We are ready to fight your anti-people policies,” he said during the agitation at SVP Circle in Kalaburagi. He thanked the people for their voluntary support of the bandh.
The bandh call received an overwhelming response. Several organisations took out rallies and staged demonstrations. It was successful even in smaller towns. Most business establishments remained closed for the larger part of the day. A holiday was declared a day before for schools and colleges. Public transport operations were hit as the NEKRTC operated-buses, both city and outside services, remained off the roads. Though an official holiday was not declared to government offices and banks, they saw less customers.
