Kharge blames BJP for MLAs’ resignations

July 07, 2019 10:24 pm | Updated 10:24 pm IST - Bengaluru

After 13 MLAs of the ruling alliance submitted their resignation letters to quit the Assembly seats, veteran Congress leader M. Mallikarjun Kharge has alleged that the BJP central leaders have a role to play in these political developments.

“The BJP has been making all-out efforts to engineer factions to topple the JD(S)-Congress government by shifting MLAs to Mumbai. How is it possible to arrange a special flight to Mumbai without the support of the BJP’s central leaders,” Mr. Kharge told presspersons here on Sunday.

Some of the MLAs who resigned were flown from HAL airport in Bengaluru to Mumbai on Saturday and have been staying at a five-star hotel.

Mr. Kharge said the BJP’s central leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah, have been making efforts to weaken non-BJP State governments. Alleging that the BJP had been making attempts to destabilise the State government in West Bengal too, he wondered: “Where is democracy in the country?”

“The Union government has no confidence in democracy. In 13 to14 States such as West Bengal, Goa, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Bihar, and Jharkhand, the BJP caused defections,” he said.
