Department of Higher Education to initiate process of setting it up

With the government issuing the order for implementation of cultural policy, the process of setting up the first State-run tribal university will commence in Karnataka. The Department of Higher Education has been asked to initiate the process.

Presently, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University at Amarkantak in Madhya Pradesh, run by the Union government, is the only State-run university of its kind.

Similarly, the process of setting up the Sufi Culture and Tatva Pada Study Centre, Folk Repertory and Prakrit and Pali Study Centre, will also commence.

The State government on October 10 issued an order for implementation of recommendations made in the cultural policy on administrative issues. Implementation of the policy will cost around ₹59.68 crore to the State exchequer. This includes annual expenditure of ₹36.68 crore and one time expenditure of ₹23 crore, according to the order issued by P.S. Malathi, Under Secretary to the Department of Kannada, Culture and Information and Public Relations.

The State Cabinet had approved an expenditure of ₹59.68 crore and earmarked ₹1 crore in the budget for implementation of the policy in phases. A panel led by writer Baragur Ramachandrappa had submitted the draft cultural policy. The government will issue orders to departments to formulate guidelines on policy recommendations soon, including curbing moral policing.
