JD(S)-Congress combine takes power in Shivamogga

The JD(S)-Congress coalition has come to power in the Shivamogga city corporation.

In the mayoral election on Saturday, JD(S) member Nagaraj Kankari was elected as Mayor while Vijayalakshmi Patil from the Congress party elected as Deputy Mayor. The post of Mayor was reserved for ‘BCM-A’ category while that of Deputy Mayor was reserved for ‘General-Woman’ category.

In the 35-member body, the Congress has 12 members, the BJP 11, the JD(S) five, the Karnataka Janata Paksha four, the Social Democratic Party of India has one and there are two independent candidates.

For the president’s post, Mr. Kankari, Sunitha Annappa of the BJP and S. Rajashekhar, rebel Congress party candidate were in fray. Mr. Kankari secured 25 votes while the BJP candidate bagged 12 votes and Mr. Rajashekhar managed to get one vote.

Ms. Patil and Renuka Nagaraj from the BJP were in fray for the Deputy Mayor. While Ms. Patil got 26, the BJP candidate got 12 votes.
