Janata Dal(S) expects Congress support for Shankar Madalgi

The Janata Dal (Secular), which supported the Congress in the election to the posts of president and vice-president of the Shivamogga Zilla Panchayat recently, wants the latter to support the candidature of Shankar Madalgi for the post of vice-president of the Belagavi Zilla Panchayat, for which the elections are scheduled on Wednesday.

In a press release, party’s district spokesman Channappa M. Vagganavar said here that the Janata Dal(S) supported the Congress in the Shivamogga Zilla Panchayat to keep the Bharatiya Janata Party out of power.

Similarly, the district Janata Dal(S) decided to support the Congress candidate for the post of president of the Belagavi Zilla Panchayat and expected the latter to support its candidate for the post of vice-president.

In the 90-member zilla panchayat, the Congress has 43 members, BJP 39, Janata Dal(S) two, and there are six Independents.

Of the six Independents, five are affiliated to the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti.
