IMA: Save doctor-patient relationship

The KPME Amendment Bill has attracted the attention of doctors beyond the State. National IMA president K.K. Aggarwal has written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah asking him to stall the KPME (Amendment) Bill, 2017, “to save the doctor-patient relationship”.

“Doctors are not criminals and no criminal prosecution clause should be made applicable to medical practice. The government and the medical fraternity has to work together for a healthy nation,” he said in the letter listing out seven demands.

Quoting Constitution

“This Bill is meant to regulate medical establishments and not medical professionals. Under the Constitution of India and other laws, the professional conduct of medical professionals are governed by medical councils and no other authority can adjudicate on these matters,” he said.

“As per the IMC Act, Sec 27, medical professionals are free to collect charges for their services. The attempt to regulate charges of medical professionals is unconstitutional,” he added.
