Jail staff and inmates sit on strike in Hindalga jail against D Roopa report in Belagavi on Thursday.

Staff and inmates of the Central Prison at Hindalga went on a silent strike on Thursday, to express solidarity with the Director-General of Police Sathyanarayan Rao who has been accused in a report of giving special treatment to Sasikala Natarajan by accepting bribe.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Diwakar Roopa has cited nine observations in her report on Parappana Agrahara in Bengaluru, including allegations of bribery against senior officials.

The report said that the leader from Tamil Nadu, lodged in Parappana Agrahara, had been given VVIP treatment in violation of rules, after she allegedly bribed officers.

In Belagavi, Hindalga Central Jail Superintendent T.P. Sesha joined a black badge protest by jail personnel against the report. They sat in a tent in front of the jail wearing black badges.

They told presspersons that Mr. Rao was a senior officer with unquestionable integrity, who was working hard to improve the department, but Ms. Roopa Diwakar’s report made invalid and untenable allegations against him.

Inside the jail, convicts sat in silence for over an hour, to express support for jail staff and senior officers accused in the report. Most of the inmates, except those in solitary confinement and high security cells, participated in the silent protest, the police said.
