Traffic around Gandhi Circle in Chitradurga town was severely hit owing to heavy rain over the past two days.

Heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lashed Chitradurga district for the last two days affecting normal life in almost all taluks of the district. Almost all water sources in Chitradurga and Challakere taluks are now filled to their full capacity even as rainwater entered several low-lying areas.

On Sunday, heavy rain lashed Chitradurga and Challakere taluks for more than three hours in the evening. Water entered low-lying areas in the city, including Kelagote, KSRTC Depot Road, Lakshmi Bazaar, JCR Main Road and Shankar Theatre Road. Residents had a tough time in removing storm water from their houses and almost all major roads in the city have been damaged owing to rainfall.

Traffic on National Highway 4 near the railway bridge was hampered owing to accumulation of storm water. On Challakere Road, vehicular movement was hampered for more than two hours as a high tension wire fell on the road owing to heavy rainfall. It took more than two hours to clear traffic. Rainwater completely inundated Gandhi Circle and several motorcycles were washed away in the overflowing water.

On Monday night, it started to rain at around 9 p.m. and continued till 4.30 a.m. on Tuesday. Power supply was affected in many localities as several electricity poles were uprooted. Since the quality of road work in the city was poor, heavy rain further damaged the roads and vehicle owners are now finding it difficult to use them.

According to sources, Chitradurga district received a total of 70 mm rainfall in the last two days.
