HC declines to stay release of 'Chambal'

The Karnataka High Court on Thursday declined to stay the release of Kannada feature film Chambal, which is scheduled to be released across the State today.

Justice S. Sunil Dutt Yadav passed the interim order refusing to stay the release after counsel appearing for the producers of the film pointed out to the court that the story of the film is a fiction and not based on any particular individual or life of the late D.K. Ravi, an IAS officer who died under mysterious circumstances in 2015.

The court also noted that the Central Board of Film Certification has issued certificate for the film as early as November 30, 2018, as the counsel for the board pointed out that the producers have stated that the film story is fiction.

The court was hearing a petition filed by Ravi’s parents — Gowramma and Kariyappa, residents of Doddako

ppal village of Kunigal taluk in Tumakuru district — who had claimed that they had reliably learnt that their son, who was an honest officer, was portrayed in a bad light towards the end of the film.

They had sought a direction to the board to withdraw the certificate, while alleging that false depiction of their son would amount to defamation. Further hearing has been adjourned till March 8.
