Deputy Commissioner P.C. Jaffer has appealed to the public to take precautionary measures with regard to the Nipah virus. He has also directed officers to spread awareness about the infection and measures to be taken to curb it.
At a meeting with officers here on Thursday, Dr. Jaffer said already 11 people died of the disease in Kerala and 19 are being treated. “A couple of cases have been reported in Mangaluru as well. We need to take extra care to avoid the spread of the infection. The disease spreads through fruits bitten by bats and birds. People should take extra care that they do not eat fruits bitten by bats or birds,” he said. The DC said there was no need to panic however as those with symptoms of the infection should consult doctors immediately. He also asked the doctors and supporting staff treating patients to take precautionary measures.
