GP poll: 229 of the 11,166 nominations rejected in Shivamogga district

Maximum number of papers filed in Sorab taluk

Of the 11,166 nominations filed for gram panchayat (GP) election in Shivamogga district, 229 have been rejected.

As many as 263 GPs will go to the polls on June 2. May 22 was the last date for filing nomination papers. The nominations were scrutinised on May 23.

According to sources in the election branch of the Deputy Commissioner’s office, 1,910 nominations were filed in Sorab taluk, and of them 36 were rejected.

The taluk-wise information on the nominations filed (rejected nominations within brackets) is as follows: Shivamogga -1,793 (07 rejected); Bhadravathi -1,770 (10); Tirthahalli - 1,250 (09); Shikaripur - 1,788 (58); Sagar - 1,496 (65); Hosanagar - 1,159 (44). The clear picture on the number of candidates who will remain in fray will emerge by the evening of May 25, the last date for withdrawal of nominations.

Meanwhile the district administration has banned conducting fairs in the limits of the GPs going to the polls on June 2 and in taluk centres where the counting of votes will be held on June 5 under column 35 (3) of the Karnataka Police Act.
