Govt. working on early release of non-life imprisonment convicts for good conduct

Home Minister K.J. George on Sunday said the State government will soon come out with guidelines for the early release of convicts undergoing sentences less that life imprisonment.

Addressing prisoners at Mysore Central Jail here after inaugurating a postgraduate study centre and silkworm cocoon handicrafts training programme, Mr. George said the Supreme Court stay on the early release of convicts was applicable only to lifers.

Earlier, speaking to reporters, Mr. George said senior officials were interrogating the terror suspects picked up from Dharwad.

When his attention was drawn to the reported movement of naxals along Karnataka’s border with Kerala near H.D. Kote, Mr George said the State's anti-naxal force was ready to meet any eventuality.

He said he would speak to the Kerala Home Minister and review the situation.

Regarding the proposed "Kiss of Love" protest in Bengaluru, Mr. George reiterated the government's stand that it will not allow "obscenity" or any demonstration that goes against the State's "culture". Local police will take action against violators, he said, but added that protest within the constitutional framework will be allowed.
