The State government is committed to supporting professional drama companies considering their contribution to the field of art and culture, Minister of State for Kannada and Culture Umashree has said.
The Minister also promised here on Sunday that the government would consider the demand for more funds for old drama companies. Ms. Umashri was here to inaugurate the first show of the Kannada play ‘Shirdi Sri Saibaba’ staged by Sri KBR Drama Company of Davangere.
Professional drama companies played a key role in growth of culture and language and the creation of awareness among the public on issues affecting the society.

Though many such companies had lost their clout for various reasons, a few of them had survived for nearly five decades facing all odds. They deserved government support. Their demand for more funds would be considered favourably, she added.
Remembering her association with the stage and also with the Sri KBR Drama Company established by veteran stage artist Chindodi Veerappa, she said this company’s contribution to theatre was inestimable. Actors who had later achieved strides in the film industry were originally trained in this company, the Minister said. I.G. Sanadi, former MP, and writer Veeranna Rajur were present.
