The Youth Services department is proposing to make use of services of physical education directors of government colleges to take care of taluk and district stadium. They will also be given responsibility of training athletes at these stadiums.
Minister of State for Youth Services, Sports and Fisheries, K. Abhayachandra Jain said he wants to make better use of the physical education directors. “There are around 200 physical education directors in the State. They stand at a better position in taking care of the stadium and lend their expertise for the budding sportspersons,” Mr. Jain told The Hindu .
The exercise has begun by making Roshan Kumar Shetty, the physical education director of Dr. G. Shankar Government First Grade College in Udupi, in-charge Assistant Director of Udupi District Stadium. “This has shown results and there is marked improvement in facilities at the stadium,” Mr. Jain said and this had made him to entrust Mr. Shetty with responsibility of arrangements for athletes for the upcoming 19th Federation Cup Senior National Athletic Tournament that starts from April 30 in Mangaluru.

Mr. Jain said such a measure will address the shortcoming in the Youth Services where people holding posts of Assistant Directors lack knowledge of sports. “They get promoted from the post of clerk and reach the post of Assistant Director”. These Assistant Directors lack knowledge of requirements at the stadium and of the athletes.
The Minister said he will be raising the issue before the Chief Minister and also the Higher Education Minister R.V. Deshpande. It would be a win-win situation for the department as it will save money on one end and make use of expertise of physical education directors for development of sports in the State.
