Opposing the Karnataka State Universities (Amendment) Bill 2017, which was passed in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, the Gulbarga University Non-Teaching Employees Association has demanded that the State government withdraw the Bill. In a letter addressed to the Governor, who is the Chancellor of universities, the association has appealed to him not to give approval to the Bill proposing the amendment to the Karnataka State Universities Act 2010.
M.B. Sajjan, honorary president of the association, addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, accused the government of drafting the Bill with an intention to centralise the education system. Referring to the recommendations made by various education commissions, Mr. Sajjan said that the objective of the commissions was to ensure decentralisation in education. He termed the Bill as “anti-education”.
Mr. Sajjan added that the amendment would give more powers to the government to take unilateral decisions, pave the way for more malpractice and corruption. If the Bill were approved, the government would take control over finances, administration and recruitment of staff in the universities.

The Non-Teaching Employees Association will organise a State-level meeting in Bengaluru on July 12 to discuss about further action, he added.
