Government to consult experts,consumers on Re. 1 a kg rice scheme

The Congress government in the State is likely to consult experts who were involved in the framing of the Centre’s Food Security Bill and consumers for effective implementation of the party’s flagship scheme of providing rice at Re. 1 a kilogram to economically poor families through the Public Distribution System (PDS).

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had announced that the scheme would be implemented across the State from June 1.

The Hindu after assuming charge, Dinesh Gundu Rao, Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, said that he planned to consult both experts from across the country, especially those involved in the drafting of the Centre’s Food Security Bill, and the community for the proper and effective execution of the scheme.

“This scheme is our government’s flagship programme. We want to ensure that subsidised foodgrains reach genuine beneficiaries. While consulting experts, I would also like to discuss the issue with consumer organisations to find out their views on how to improve the system,” Mr. Dinesh Gundu Rao said.

He said he has convened a review meeting on Tuesday after which he would be able to comment on the issue of bogus ration cards and related aspects. “My vision is to make Karnataka a model State in the Public Distribution System and to ensure that the people of the State are benefitted,” he added.

Soon after making the announcement about the scheme, Mr. Siddaramaiah had requested the Centre for additional supply of rice.
