‘Government responsible for farmers’ suicide’

Members of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha on Friday staged a protest here, criticising the State government for two farmers committing suicide on Thursday.

The protesters demanded that adequate compensation be paid to the families of the farmers who had committed suicide owing to burden of debt. .

Leaders of KRRS and Hasiru Sene alleged that the State government had failed to initiate measures to resolve the problems being faced by sugarcane growers owing to non-payment of outstanding amount by the sugar factories. “The government has not realised the seriousness of the problem even after a farmer ended his life by consuming poison during Belgavi session last year,” said Ravi Anekere, general secretary of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, while addressing the protesters.

Meanwhile, members of the KRRS and Hasiru Sene warned that the agitation would be intensified in the coming days, if the government failed to provide adequate compensation to the families of farmers who had committed suicide.
