Canine lovers, especially those who like Mudhol Hounds — a popular native breed — can now simply go online to purchase them.

Dog owners are taking the tech-route to sell these puppies on trading websites such as olx.in. Just type ‘Mudhol Dog’ in the search engine of the website, and one can see several posts related to the puppies, with photographs and price details.

The prices range from Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 15,000, but the buyers say they are open to negotiation.

Boost to Mudhols

Mahesh Dodamani, Head of the Mudhol Dog Research Centre at Timmapur village of Mudhol taluk, is happy that the native breed is gaining popularity.

“The centre was started with the sole objective of promoting this dog breed. If the breed is now available online, then it only shows that our efforts are bearing fruits,” he sad. However, Dr. Dodamani suggested that the buyers be alert against being duped, and advised them to take along a canine expert or study about the dog before buying.

He said the prices of the puppies have sharply increased after the establishment of the centre in Mudhol. “Earlier, each puppy was sold at Rs. 1,000; now the cost has reached Rs. 10,000 in the open market,” he said. He admitted that the centre did not have its own separate website that could offer details of the puppies available.

He said that within a couple of months a separate website would be developed for the centre by Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fishery Sciences University, Bidar, which established the centre.

“Meanwhile, buyers could contact the centre through Facebook by typing canine research and information centre, Timmapur,” he said.
