Five-day national FIDE rated open chess tournament in Manipal from May 13

The Udupi District Chess Association, T.A. Pai Management Institute (TAPMI), and Lions Club would be organising the first Udupi National FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament in Manipal from May 13 to 17.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, K. Rajgopal Shenoy, president of the association, said that the tournament was being held under the aegis of the United Karnataka Chess Association. As many as 239 chess players from Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Goa, Gujarat and Rajasthan had already registered for the tournament. Another 50 players were expected to register.

The tournament would be held in the age-groups of Under-8 boys and girls, Under-10 boys and girls, U-12 boys and girls, U-14 boys and girls and U-16 boys and girls. A total of 115 prizes worth Rs. 2 lakh would be given in various categories. The champion will receive the Kallya Devaraya Shenoy Memorial Trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 30,000. Five International Masters and Grandmasters are expected to participate in the tournament.

The tournament will be conducted as per FIDE laws of chess and FIDE Swiss system with nine rounds with time control of 90 minutes.

R. Vishal, Deputy Commissioner, will inaugurate the tournament on May 13. H.S. Ballal, Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University, Suresh Prabhu, Lions District Governor, R.C. Natarajan, Director of TAPMI, will be chief guests. K. Abhayachandra Jain, Minister for Sports and Fisheries, will give away the prizes on May 17. Vinay Kumar Sorake, Urban Development Minister, Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA, would be guests, Dr. Shenoy said.
