B.C. Geetha, Chairperson of the Malnad Area Development Board, has stressed the need to empower women economically.

Inaugurating a programme organised by the Sahyadri Urban Women Cooperative Bank and Kodachadri Rural Development Trust to mark the International Women’s Day here on Friday, she said women had displayed promptness in repayment of loans they had taken from self-help groups (SHGs) and banking institutions. The banks and financial institutions should ensure easy access to credit facilities for women entrepreneurs. It was time for SHGs to extend their activities. Apart from extending credit facilities for women, the SHGs should provide vocational training and promote entrepreneurial ventures of women, she said.

The Malnad bank would come out with special programmes to empower women in the Malnad region in coming days, she said. R.M. Manjunatha Gowda, president of the Karnataka State Cooperative Apex Bank, spoke.

Freedom fighter Vishalakshi was felicitated on the occasion.
