Fate of 147 candidates to be known by noon

The fate of 147 candidates including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, his son Yathindra, Ministers H.C. Mahadevappa and Tanveer Sait, besides former Ministers A. H. Vishwanath and S.A. Ramdas, who are in fray from the 11 Assembly constituencies in the district, will be known by noon on Tuesday.

A total of 18.46 lakh voters, of the total 24.39 lakh cast their votes between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) set up at 2,687 booths across Mysuru district on Saturday. The voter turnout witnessed a marginal increase from 72.8% during the 2013 Assembly polls to 74.05% this year.

Mr. Siddaramaiah is locked in a stiff electoral duel with his friend-turned-foe and JD(S) candidate G.T. Deve Gowda in Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency, while his son Yathindra is pitted against JD(S) candidate Abhishek in Varuna Assembly segment.

In T. Narsipura Assembly constituency, Minister for Public Works H.C. Mahadevappa is engaged in an electoral fight with JD(S) candidate Ashwin Kumar; while former Minister A.H. Vishwanath, who quit the Congress and joined the JD(S), is facing Mr. Manjunath of the Congress in Hunsur Assembly segment.

In Krishnaraja Assembly segment, former Minister S.A. Ramdas of the BJP is aiming to wrest the seat from the Congress party’s M.K. Somashekar; while Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Tanveer Sait is looking to retain the Narasimharaja Assembly constituency. Mr. Sait is locked in a multi-cornered contest with SDPI’s Abdul Majeed, JD(S) candidate Abdul Azeez alias Abdullah, besides BJP’s S. Satish who is also known as Sandesh Swamy.

In Chamaraja Assembly constituency, Congress MLA Vasu is fighting to retain the seat against BJP’s Nagendra, JD(S) candidate and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore K.S. Rangappa, besides rebel JD(S) leader Harish Gowda.

In Nanjangud, which witnessed by-polls about a year ago, MLA Kadale Keshavamurthy of the Congress is pitted against Harshavardhan, the BJP candidate, who is related to former Minister Srinivas Prasad.

In H.D. Kote, the Congress has fielded late JD(S) MLA Chikkamadu’s son Anil Chikkamadu against JD(S) candidate Chikkanna and BJP’s B. Siddaraju; while MLA of Periyapatna Venkatesh is facing a challenge from JD(S) nominee Mahadev and BJP’s Manjunath.

In K.R. Nagar, Sa.Ra. Mahesh is facing D. Ravishankar of the Congresss.

Counting centres

While the counting of votes cast in Hunsur, Nanjangud, Narasimharaja, H.D. Kote, Krishnaraja, Chamundeshwari and T. Narspura will be taken up at the Government Maharani’s Women’s Commerce and Management College at Paduvarahalli in Mysuru, the votes cast in Periyapatna, K.R. Nagar, Chamaraja and Varuna will be done at NIE Institute of Technology, Hootgalli Industria Aarea, Koorgalli village, Mysuru.
