Farmer from Haveri commits suicide

Close on the heels of suicide cases of sugarcane farmers, another farmer from Haveri district has committed suicide by consuming poison.

The incident occurred at Kooragund village in Haveri taluk on Friday night. The deceased farmer Jagadish Kadeganni (32) was reportedly under debt.

Jagadish had eight acres of land out of which a part has been acquired for the Upper Tunga Project. However, like other farmers whose land has been acquired for the project, he too has not received the compensation.

Jagadish reportedly consumed poison on Friday night and breathed his last after midnight. The Guttal Police have registered a case. Jagadish is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.

On getting the news, Superintendent of Police of Haveri district Shashikumar, and Additional SP Shrinath Joshi visited the village.

The Hindu that Jagadish had loans to the tune of Rs. 3 crore at the State Bank of India. Three years ago, the small goods vehicle he had purchased was seized by the Vehicle Finance company for not paying the installment.

Mr. Joshi said that according to the family members, the bank had issued a notice to him recently with regard to his outstanding loan. “However we could not get the copy of the notice as the family members said that he had torn it and thrown it away,” Mr. Joshi said.

According to sources close to the family, Jagadish had lost his maize crop lost year due to drought and was under pressure due to the notice served by the bank.

Haveri MLA Rudrappa Lamani of Congress and members of other political parties visited the house of Mr. Kadeganni to console his family members. Mr. Lamani assured the family members of taking up the issue with the Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister and to try and enhance the compensation.
