Constable Raghuveer and right accused Tajuddin in hospital.

In a police action on the outskirts of Kalaburagi on Tuesday morning, an undertrial, who escaped from Kalaburagi Central Prison last year, was shot at and injured, even as a police constable suffered stab wounds when the undertrial attacked him.

The undertrial was rushed to the teaching hospital attached to Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (district hospital) and the constable was admitted to Basaveshwara Hospital.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team from the University and Farhatabad police stations rushed to Ashraya Colony near Kesaratagi on the outskirts of the city to arrest Tajuddin, who had been on the run since he had escaped from the prison in June last year. The police said that they were forced to open fire as the accused, who was hiding in one of the abandoned houses in the colony, attacked the team with lethal weapons, injuring Raghuveer, a police constable attached to the Farhatabad Police Station.

“We were left with no option but to open fire after the accused attacked the police team with a knife and stabbed one of the constables. We fired two rounds injuring him in his right leg and arrested him,” S.S. Hallur, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Rural), who led team, told

The Hindu.

According to sources in the Police Department, Tajuddin was among the four who were arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, on the charge of raping a minor girl in March 2016. He escaped from a hospital. Though he was caught immediately, he and the other three accused escaped from prison in June 2016. Since then he has been on the run. Two of the accused were arrested again, while the third surrendered. A case has been registered in the University Police Station.
