Former Minister Leeladevi Prasad reiterated that women’s participation in politics can be seen as a key indicator of gender equality and development of the society. Women’s empowerment is vital for improving economic, social and political conditions within the framework of sustainable development, she said.

She was speaking after inaugurating the two-day 10th Mahadevi Akkagala Sammelan organised by the Kalaburagi Basava Samiti Akkana Balaga here on Saturday.

Ms. Prasad said it was time that women raise their voice demanding 50% reservation in Parliament. Despite the fact that women’s political participation is guaranteed by the Constitution, ensuring their political leadership is essential for building a strong and vibrant democracy.

Lauding the samiti for organising the sammelan for a continuous 10 years, Ms. Prasad underlined that such sammelans are the need of the hour to propagate the ideologies of social reformers to youngsters. The preachings of the 12th century social reformer Basavanna continues to be highly relevant to the society, she said.
