Efforts are underway to transform the conventional education system into a purpose-oriented one, said H. Devaraj, vice-chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi, here on Saturday.

In a speech, copies of which were distributed at the 7th Graduates' Day of JSS College of Arts, Commerce and Science, Prof. Devaraj, who was not present at the event, said "the education system should enable students to acquire the required skills and techniques so that they become employable or can become entrepreneurs in the area of their interest."

Recently, the UGC had introduced a number of skill-oriented programmes under the Vocational Scheme and Community College Scheme, he added.
