Driver arrested in accident case

The police have arrested the driver of the multi-utility vehicle (MUV) on Wednesday on the charges of allegedly knocking down a youth and killing him, in Mavinakoppa village, on the outskirts of Hosanagar town recently.

Samiullah, the MUV driver, is a resident of Bengaluru. The police said that the vehicle was transporting construction material for the Sharavathi bridge project near Pataguppa.

Kantharaj (27), a resident of Varakodu village, who was employed with a private firm, was waiting to board a bus on the side of the road at Kotekaanu Cross, on the outskirts of Mavinakoppa village, with his cousin brother Dinesh. The speeding MUV, believed to be heading towards Hosanagar, hit Mr. Kantharaj leaving him seriously injured. He died on the spot.

The driver, Samiullah, had fled the scene.

The police said that the driver was caught in Shivamogga city. The Hosanagar police have booked a case under sections 304A (causing death by negligence) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act of endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC against the arrested.
