A man was arrested here on Monday for allegedly strangling his wife Mamata Shetty (33), a college teacher, to death in their house at Kodikal here.

Gangadhar Padubidri (41), a stringer with Doordarshan (News) channel, has reportedly admitted to the murder. According to the Urwa police, the incident came to light following a complaint by Gangadhar’s elder brother Mohanangaiah Swamy.

The police said Mr. Swamy found Gangadhar’s wife dead in the hall when he visited the house around 4 p.m. on Monday. Following the compliant, the police traced Gangadhar and arrested him. The police said Gangadhar and Mamata, an assistant professor at SDM Law College, were having frequent fights. Mamata suspected that her husband was having an affair with a woman.

Two days ago, the fight reached the police. Following counselling, the two agreed to live peacefully, the police said.

Gangadhar’s elder brother Lolaksha, a Dalit activist, said the incident had shocked the family. “It is difficult to believe he murdered his wife, whom he loved a lot.”

Mr. Lolaksha said family members had suggested Gangadhar to undergo counselling and resolve misunderstandings with his wife.
